Historique :	Ce tableau est signé et daté. J. Perron est un artiste inconnu dont on ne conaît aucune autre oeuvre. On trouve dans les archives de Montluçon un Jehan Perron, documenté entre 1618 et 1624, peut-être s'agit-il du même peintre. La date d'exécution de 1621 paraît précoce pour un tableau de cet ordre que l'on aurait daté d'un peu plus tard dans le siècle.

Vêtu d'une peau de bête, il tient de la main gauche la croix et de la main droite une coquille Saint-Jacques pour y recueillir un filet d'eau de source qui coule entre les rochers. Derrière lui, en fond de paysage : scène de baptême.
